Het waren niet helemaal de 12 boten die we verwacht hadden, of 30 knopen topsnelheid. Maar met 6 boten op het water, en topsnelheden van een knoop of 23 heeft iedereen een hoop lol gehad, en daar zeilen we voor toch?
Als jonge heropgerichte klasse is het nog moeilijk om grote velden Moths aan de start te krijgen, maar het vliegen in deze draagvleugelboten geeft een kick die moeilijk te evenaren is, en dat alleen is genoeg reden om de boot te zeilen. Op zaterdag in Muiderzand waren er genoeg kicks te beleven. Door de Noorwestenwind was Muiderzand lagerwal, en was het spectakel in de golven daar niet van de lucht. Zeker niet toen de wind later op de dag wat aantrok. Er werd gezamelijk getraind, waarbij de de laatste tips en trucs werden uitgewisseld. Op zondag, na lang wachten op wind, konden dan toch nog 2 wedstrijdjes gezeild worden, dit keer in "lowriding mode" (dus zonder te vliegen). Giovanni Galeotti uit Belgie wist de omstrandigheden het beste in te schatten, en ging met de Foil Fest Cup naar huis. Eelco Boers (overgestapt vanuit de F18, en 3e op de laatste EK van de International Moth) ging als tweede rond. Uiteindelijk gingen de 6 deelnemers tevreden, met spierpijn, bulten door de soms erg brute crashes op zaterdag, wijzer door het uitwisselen van instellingen en licht verbrand door het heerlijke zonnetje weer naar huis. It wasn't the 12 boats and 30 knot top speeds we hoped for, but with 6 boats on the water, and top speeds of around 23 knots everybody had heaps of fun, and that's what we do this for, isn't it?
As a newly re-established class in the Netherlands and Belgium it's still hard to get big fleets on the water, but flying these boats gives a kick that is hard to describe, and that alone is enough reason to sail the foiling moth. Especially on the saturday at Muiderzand there were enough kicks to be found. The 18 knot on-shore north-westerly wind produced a subsantial chop resulting in very challenging conditions for foiling. There was lots of spectacle in the waves! Saturday was a training day, and many tips and tricks were shared to help everybody get the best out of their boats.
On sunday, after a long wait for wind, we could sail 2 races in lowriding conditions. Giovanni Galeotti from Belgium handled these conditions best, and went home with the Foil Fest Cup. Eelco Boers (who came to the Moth after a career sailing the F18 catamaran, and 3rd at the last European Moth Championships) took second. After all, the 6 participants went home very satisfied, bruised (crashing!), wiser and sunburned after another good weekend of foiling fun.
